Y2Mate Alternative: YouTube Downloader

Paste a YouTube link and save the MP4 or MP3 without pop-ups or redirects. 360p is instant; 720p, 1080p and 4K are prepared in seconds with the audio included.

vidstill is an independent tool and is not affiliated with Y2Mate. This page explains what Y2Mate does and how to get the same result here.

What Y2Mate is

Y2Mate is one of the longest-running names in YouTube downloading. The original site let you paste a link, choose between MP4 at several resolutions or MP3 audio, and save the file, all without an account. It became the default answer to "how do I download a YouTube video" for many people, and the name is now searched hundreds of thousands of times a month.

That popularity produced clones. Today "Y2Mate" appears on many domains with different endings and slightly different designs, some connected to each other and many not. They all present the same flow: paste, pick a format, download. People use them for the usual reasons: saving a tutorial for offline viewing, keeping a copy of their own upload, taking a clip they are allowed to reuse, or extracting the audio from a lecture.

Why people are looking for a Y2Mate alternative

The first reason is finding it at all. With so many domains sharing the name, the address you used last year may now redirect, show a parked page, or be blocked by a network filter. Search results shift between mirrors, and it is hard to tell which is the site you remember.

The second reason is the advertising. Y2Mate-style pages are known for pop-ups, redirects on the first click, and prompts to allow browser notifications before the download starts. Getting the file often means closing several tabs. On some mirrors the download button leads to another site entirely.

The third is the HD problem. YouTube serves HD video and audio as separate streams, and merging them costs server time. Some mirrors give you a silent 720p or 1080p file, and some quietly serve a lower resolution than the one you picked.

How to download a YouTube video with vidstill

  1. Copy the YouTube link. From the browser address bar, or Share → Copy link in the app. Shorts and youtu.be links are fine.
  2. Paste it into the box at the top of this page and press Go. The video's title, channel and length appear so you can confirm it.
  3. Pick a format. MP4 360p · instant saves straight from YouTube. 720p, 1080p and best (up to 4K) are prepared with the audio merged in and show a Download button after a few seconds. MP3 audio gives you a 192 kbps MP3.
  4. Save the file. No new tabs, no notification prompt. The browser downloads it like any other file.

Prepared files stay on our servers for about an hour and are then deleted. If you want the same video again later, paste the link again.

What the format options mean

  • 360p, instant. The one combined file YouTube still serves for every video. Small, plays anywhere, fetched by your browser directly from YouTube.
  • 720p and 1080p. Sharp on a phone or tablet, or a laptop and TV respectively. Both are joined from YouTube's separate video and audio streams without re-encoding, so quality matches what YouTube plays.
  • Best. The highest resolution the uploader provided, up to 4K. Expect large files.
  • MP3. Audio only, 192 kbps. Enough to keep everything YouTube's own audio stream contains.

What you get beyond the download

Y2Mate does one thing. vidstill does the same thing and adds a few that turn out to matter for the same videos.

  • Transcript and summary. Every video gets a Transcript tab (captions with timestamps, or speech-to-text when there are none) and a Summary tab that writes a TL;DR, key points or chapters from it. You can read what a long video says before deciding to download it, or skip the download entirely.
  • A public page for the video. Each video you paste gets its own page with the transcript and summaries. Share it, or sign in to make it private.
  • Other platforms. TikTok, Instagram and X links go in the same box and give an MP4 or MP3 the same way.

How vidstill compares with Y2Mate

The job is the same and the price for light use is the same: free, no account, no install. The differences are a stable address, no pop-ups or redirects between you and the file, audio always included in HD, and the transcript and summary tabs.

What vidstill does not do: there is no browser extension or bookmarklet, so you paste links rather than pressing a button next to the YouTube player. There is no playlist or batch download yet. Guests get 3 downloads a day; a free account gets 10; Pro removes the limit and is priced at /pricing. Formats are MP4 and MP3 only, without the WebM, 3GP or bitrate menus some Y2Mate mirrors show. It only fetches public videos: nothing private, age-restricted, login-walled or live. If YouTube is rate-limiting requests, you may be asked to wait a minute.

Troubleshooting

  • "That does not look like a supported link." Copy the full video address, not a playlist or channel page.
  • "This video is unavailable." It is private, removed, or blocked in the region our servers use.
  • The HD file is slow to prepare. Long 4K videos take longer. Try 1080p or 720p if you are in a hurry.
  • You hit today's limit. Sign up to raise the allowance or wait until tomorrow.

vidstill fetches public videos on your behalf and does not keep copies; prepared files are deleted after about an hour. Download only what you have the right to keep, such as your own uploads, Creative Commons content, or something you may watch and want offline for personal use. Do not re-upload or sell other people's work. Rights holders can use the DMCA page to have a public video page removed.

FAQ

Is vidstill connected to Y2Mate?
No. vidstill is an independent tool and has nothing to do with Y2Mate or any of the sites using that name. It covers the same job, YouTube to MP4 or MP3, and adds a transcript and summary for every video.
Which Y2Mate is the real one?
We cannot tell you. The name appears on many domains, some of them copies of each other, and they change over time. That uncertainty is one reason people look for a downloader that stays on one address.
Is the Y2Mate alternative free?
Yes for everyday use. Guests can download 3 videos a day without an account, a free account allows 10, and Pro removes the limit. There is nothing to install and no software bundled with the download.
Does the HD file have sound?
Yes. YouTube stores HD video and audio separately; vidstill fetches both and merges them into one MP4 before you download, without re-encoding. 360p is the single combined file YouTube already serves, so it saves instantly.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. It is a web page, so it works in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android with nothing to install. On iPhone the file goes to Files under Downloads; on Android it goes to the Downloads folder.
Can I download playlists or several videos at once?
Not yet. vidstill takes one video link at a time. Playlist and channel links are rejected with a message asking for a video link.
Is downloading from YouTube legal?
Downloading for personal, offline viewing of content you are allowed to watch is generally fine, and your own videos or Creative Commons content are always fine. Re-uploading or selling someone else's work is not. Check the rules where you live.
