What YT1s is

YT1s is a YouTube downloader and converter website. The name hints at the promise: get the file in about a second. You paste a link, pick MP4 at a resolution or MP3, and download. It has no account, no software, and a clean-looking form, which is why it turned up in so many "how to download a YouTube video" answers and why the name is still searched tens of thousands of times a month.

The jobs people brought to it are the ordinary ones. Keeping a course video for offline study, saving their own upload after the original was lost, grabbing a clip they have permission to reuse, or turning a talk into audio for the commute.

Why people are looking for a YT1s alternative

Downloader sites of this kind share a few problems, and YT1s is no exception. Domains change: the address you bookmarked may now redirect, sit behind a network block at school or work, or not resolve at all. When a version does load, advertising surrounds the download button and the first click sometimes opens a new tab rather than saving the file.

There is also the HD question. YouTube serves anything above 360p as separate video and audio streams. Some converters give you a silent HD file, some hand you the 360p file regardless of what you chose, and the "one second" promise usually only holds for the low-resolution file that needs no merging.

4. Save the file. It downloads like any other file, with no extra tab in between.

The first few downloads each day need no account. Prepared HD files stay available for about an hour and are then deleted.

Where the seconds go

It helps to know what is happening so you can choose the right option.

• 360p needs no processing. YouTube still serves one combined file with video and audio at this size, and the browser saves it directly. This is the only truly instant option on any downloader.
• 720p, 1080p and 4K exist on YouTube only as a video stream and a separate audio stream. vidstill fetches both and joins them into a single MP4 without re-encoding. That is a copy, not a conversion, so a typical ten-minute 1080p video is ready in a few seconds. A long 4K upload takes longer because there is simply more to fetch.
• MP3 is transcoded from YouTube's audio stream, which also takes a few seconds.

If you are in a hurry on a phone, take 360p. If you want it to look good on a laptop or TV, the few seconds for 1080p are worth it.
